One of the measures
of the spread of a set of statistical data is the difference in
value between the highest and lowest values.
For example, the times
of the runners for a half marathon race are recorded. The fastest
time was 72 minutes and the slowest time was 179 minutes. The range
is 179 - 72 = 107 minutes.
